Protect your teeth with a mouthguard.

Mouthguards offer a cushion-like protection to protect your teeth against impact from sports injuries, bruxism, and TMJ. If you or your child is an athlete, a mouthguard is an essential piece of equipment to protect against a dental injury. Avoiding costly and painful dental procedures may be just one mouthguard away.

There are many ways to protect your teeth against decay, infection, and injury. While preventative maintenance like daily brushing and flossing along with biannual professional cleanings help protect your teeth against infection and decay, you also need to protect your teeth against injury and dental trauma.

Common reasons for a mouthguard

Mouthguards for sports can protect your smile.

While custom-made mouthguards are generally the most effective type of mouthguards, they are not the only type of mouthguards available to you. Dr. Slootsky at Artistic Dentistry will be able to help you determine the best type of mouthguard for you and your lifestyle.

Types of mouthguards

Mouthguards protect your bite and smile in various ways.

  • Stock: These mouthguards come pre-made and are generally inexpensive. They do not, however, fit as well as other types of mouthguards. As a result of inappropriate fitting, stock mouthguards are not typically recommended because they do not protect as well.
  • Boil and Bite: Boil and bite mouthguards are available at most drug stores and sporting goods stores. Because these mouthguards are made of a thermoplastic material, you simply boil the mouthguard and then place it in your mouth. By softening the material, the mouthguard can mold around your teeth.

The primary issue with stock and boil and bite mouthguard use is the inability to adjust the mouthguard as needed for the patient. These methods don’t fit and feel as good versus custom mouthguard.

  • Custom-made mouthguards: Custom mouthguards are made specifically for you in a lab (or our office). Dr. Slootsky at Artistic Dentistry will take a mold of your teeth to ensure that your mouthguard provides the optimal amount of protection and comfort. While custom-made mouthguards are the most expensive, they provide the most amount of support and protection against injury.

At Artistic Dentistry, our dentist is devoted to providing you with the high-quality, personalized dental care that you deserve. If you need a mouthguard for any reason, Dr. Slootsky is here to guide you through your decision-making process to ensure that you get the right mouthguard to suit your needs.
